(Continued)  Beat around the bush: When the hunted boar hid in the undergrowth of a clump of bushes, the hunter would have ‘other’ people take the direct approach and go in to chase the boar out.  However, it was safer, but very time consuming, to beat around the bush.  (I can understand the concerns of the ‘ beat around the bushers’, having had to deal with wild boars in the forests of Germany at night.)

The best thing since sliced bread: Thank you Wonder Bread advertisements; the first commercial manufacturer of pre-wrapped, pre-sliced bread. wonderbread

The first effective bread-slicing machine was invented by Iowan Otto Frederick Rohwedder and placed into service in 1928 by the Chillicothe Baking Company, in Missouri.  By the 1930s, pre-sliced bread was fully commercialized, and standardization was reinforced by other inventions that required uniform slices, such as toasters.

If a hummingbird had your brain, it would fly upside down and backwards: Might just be a compliment, since hummingbirds are the only birds that can fly both forward and backwards; and can also hover in mid-air, fly sideways, and even upside-down.
